Nyiragongo volcano, voyage to the center of the earth
(Democratic Republic of Congo)

The monitoring and study of Nyiragongo are priorities for the United Nations unit installed in Goma, a city of 800,000 inhabitants located at the foot of the volcano. A team from the Geneva Volcanology Society offered technical support for the positioning of devices with which to collect data from the crater, often under acrobatic conditions. In June 2010, they reached the edge of the vast lava lake, approaching as close as 1 metre the millions of cubic meters of magma agitated by huge bubbles of gas. Step after step, Olivier Grunewald traces this image-rich, first-of-its-kind adventure in the midst of acid gases.
